Sacredness is often intertwined with death, and I’ve noticed how frequently the grotesque plays a role in that transformation. From Christ’s sacrifice to Viking Ättestupa rituals or the Emile Bell’s child, there’s an unsettling connection—does death require a grotesque element to be seen as sacred, or do we, as humans, project sacredness onto what disturbs and fascinates us?
Some things only become sacred once they die, and if they are also eerie, people become transfixed, unable to look away. Sitting with these thoughts, I gradually shifted from creating my own grotesque imagery to seeking out the grotesque that already exists in the world.
Over the past six years, I have sought out sites and scenes where acculumated phantasma overlay physical transformation—landscapes marked by melting and solidifying, eruptions in urban spaces, fractured and rising ground, or remnants left behind by a receding sea.
Journey continues.
